The city of Ptuj bears a strong mark of carnival traditions, thus developing into an ever more important European Carnival Centre. The carnival in Ptuj, called KURENTOVANJE, is the most high-profile carnival event of public importance in Slovenia. The 53-year-long tradition of organised events and performances is, among other things, meant to preserve and develop this extraordinary movable cultural heritage and ethnographic tradition. Since 1991 Ptuj has been a member of the Federation of European Carnival Cities (FECC), which has helped a lot to achieve a better visibility and enhance identity, recognition and growth of numerous new carnival contents.

We are proud to announce the 53rd traditional carnival event, the biggest in Slovenia, called Kurentovanje. The first organised procession of traditional carnival masks took place on Shrove Sunday in 1960 and has been organised ever since. There have been many changes and modifications which have turned this tradition into an attractive carnival event worthwhile seeing.

The Kurentovanje International Carnival Festival will take place in Ptuj from the 3^rd to the 12^th February.
